Brauerei Fässla Bamberg (Oberfranken)
Here the dwarf rolls the Fässla – thinks the one who believes the house crest of the brewery Fässla or perhaps has caught one „Zwergla“ too much. In reality, brewmaster Sebastian Kalb is currently getting the beer kegs of the traditional Bamberg brewery rolling. Since 1986, he has been carrying on the more than 350-year-old Fässla tradition. In the very building where the history of what is now Bamberg's second-largest brewery began in 1649: In Königstraße 19-21. In the middle of the city center, just opposite the brewery Spezial, lies the old brewery inn and its parent house. The large gate through which the horse-drawn carts filled with beer kegs used to clatter is still preserved. Today the gate leads into the „Schwemme“. This is where real Bambergers meet for an after-work beer, regulars from the region and tourists for a Seidla - young and old alike. Not only because the beer tastes great, but also because the atmosphere there and in the pub is authentic. With a lot of effort Sebastian Kalb has renovated the house since Übernahme and kept all the traditions. Even in the brewing of beer.
Bamberg's strongest beer
A dark brown, crisp, full-bodied Doppelbock that is second to none: Bambergator. It is traditionally brewed at the beginning of October and served for the first time at the legendary Bockbieranstich, a must-attend event in the city. With an original gravity of 21 percent and an alcohol content of 8.5 percent, the Doppelbock really packs a punch. The „Zwergla“, a genuine Bamberg beer speciality, is also a bit stronger than a classic dark beer at 6 percent alcohol. But that's precisely what makes it an unforgettable full-bodied beer. Sebastian Kalb brews a total of six types of beer in the typical Frankish brewing tradition. With water from their own deep well, the finest hops, the best malt and home-brewed pure yeast. They guarantee an always consistent quality, as well as the typical Fässla beer taste that beer fans from all over the world appreciate.
Hospitality, beer garden and more
Who once sat in the wood-floored restaurant or in the beer garden in the courtyard of the brewery in the Königstraße, we will always rave about it. Because in addition to the excellent beers, the tastiest fresh home cooking is served. Specialties such as Schäuferla with savoy cabbage and dumplings, a classic roast pork or a hearty snack platter. If you can't find a seat in the main restaurant, you can stop by the Fässla cellar on Moosstrasse in Bamberg or one of the Fässla parlors in the area to see what's available. By the way: If you want to stay overnight in Bamberg... with a total of 26 rooms, the parent house offers enough space.
In the dwarf store in the Wallensteinpassage you can find everything a dwarf's heart desires. Classic T-shirts, beer mats and beer glasses, for example, or handmade accessories with the Fässla dwarf motif. A visit to the dwarf store should be included in a visit to Bamberg in any case...

Brewmaster Roland Kalb in interview
How did you get into brewing and how long have you been brewing?
In 1978 my father took over the brewery Fässla übernommen and since then I am in the business. My one son and daughter also work in the business. My 25-year-old son is a brewmaster, my daughter a restaurant specialist. My second son is not active in the business.
How many types of beer are brewed at you and why just these?
We brew a lager, which is our main beer. In addition, the Gold Pils and the Bamberg Zwergla. So in total we brew three varieties. At the end of the year, for the Bockbieranstich in October, we brew another strong beer, the Bambergator. This is Bamberg's strongest beer. It has 20 percent original gravity. There is really what behind it. :)
What makes für you a really good beer from?
I hold nothing of light beers or alcohol-free beers. A beer must be substantial and have character. Rather a half or two less, but dafür substantial and with character. A good beer is a real hero beer. And hero beers don't all taste the same.
What excites you about brewing beer? Why do you love this craft?
I love the sale. But I also enjoy brewing beer.
When did you start brewing? Which traditions and values are important to you to preserve, which new ones are added for you?
Brewing has been going on in the brewery Fässla since 1649, a year after the 30-year war, Important to me are the fränkische hospitality, new innovations. And: saving energy where possible. We have only one big problem. We are not allowed to build solar panels in the city. But I have on a piece of land of mine, which is outside of Bamberg, in prospect that on 100,000 m² a solar park will be built.
Where are the biggest challenges for you at the moment?
The biggest, biggest challenge for me is currently Corona. I hope that time is soon over and we have a normal life again. That we can communicate normally and have parties again. I love going to a beer festival, with a schönen brass band music and a good meal – it hurts not to be able to do that.
Which activity makes you particularly fun in the brewery?
Do you provide training? And what must bring a brewer of tomorrow?
We are a training company, have an apprentice für the brewery and one für the catering. Getting apprentices is not a problem. Brewing is a cult profession. Tomorrow's brewers must have a love of their profession and, of course, the necessary know-how. Here, the requirements have – changed considerably in contrast to the past. A brewer of today must already have something technically and not only perform cleaning work.
Last but not least: Your favorite beer / favorite beer style and what dish tastes best to you in addition?
Of my beers I drink the Zwergla the dearest and eat a Schäuferla to it. Bezüglich beer styles ... I am not a fan of craft beers. A schönes beer from a country brewery – that is für me a real treat.
