Beer from Franconia

When the connoisseur thinks of a fresh Franconian "Seidla", immediate anticipation of a real treat arises. At Hier-gibts-Bier.de, you follow the traces of the traditional golden barley juice and discover the ‘beer country’ Franconia in its perfection with its over 1000-year-old tradition in the art of brewing and beer culture... and you can taste that! The diversity of the varieties is reflective of the nature of the region itself. From Hof to Aschaffenburg, from Neustadt an der Saale to Weißenburg. Even though there isn’t an official geographical statutory limitation of the region Franconia, the north of Bavaria - especially the regions of Middle and Upper Franconia - are famously known as the “Land of 1,000 Beers” worldwide. Yes, Franconia can indeed make this claim. It is home to a whopping 174 breweries and over 2,500 different beers are brewed there. Currently, no other region and no other country in the world can compete with that - world record! Historic beer varieties and regional specialties are brewed by combining traditional brewing techniques with the latest technology, using the finest ingredients and drawing on lots of experience. Each beer variety has its own aroma and each brew tastes differently because every brewery uses individual recipes, which are often passed down as a family secret from one generation to the next. In Franconia, the brewing takes place in the numerous private breweries and microbreweries and not seldom produces such small quantities that the beer is only served in the onsite pub. If you want to experience beer culture in its purest form, you should come to Franconia. There are endless possibilities to enjoy beer: in hundreds of beer gardens and beer cellars, at beer festivals, at the traditional ‘Bockbier’ tapping or on one of the legendary beer hikes from brewery to brewery. That’s enjoyment and joie de vivre – and beer tasting included

Franconian barley malt, the finest aroma hops - that's what makes beer from Franconia so special

Not only are the beers in Franconia brewed according to the German purity law, but also according to traditional brewing techniques in combination with the latest technology, using the finest ingredients and plenty of passion, which applies to historic beers varieties and regional specialties alike. Each beer variety still has its own aroma and each brew tastes differently. Further, regional ingredients elevate Franconian beers to something very special. Golden-yellow barley malt and the finest aroma hops from the Franconian region, for example from the hilly surroundings of the Spalt region, the northern Hallertau or the Hersbrucker Alb region, in addition to fresh spring and rock water from Upper Franconia are used. They all guarantee the best quality because the old saying also applies to beer brewing: "A product is only as good as its ingredients".

In our online shop, you will find a large selection of outstanding Franconian beers - numerous classics and those which might be someday. In order to ease navigation, we have divided the beer range into the following categories: Pilsner beer, light lager beer, dark beer, ‘Kellerbier’ (lit. cellar beer)/Zwickl, wheat beer, smoked beer. Further information can be found with each respective beer.

Smoked beer, Ungespundetes, Zwickl/Kellerbier

You should know and try these three typical Franconian beer types. Admittedly, Rauchbier tastes a little peculiar, like smoked ham, but here in Franconia we love it. As the name suggests, this dark, almost black-brownish beer has a slight smoky taste, is tangy and rather palatable. Its most well-known representative? The "AECHT Schlenkerla Rauchbier" from the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla in Bamberg. This Franconian beer specialty has gained worldwide fame, as has the brewery and its traditional rustic restaurant. They are a tourist magnet for many visiting Bamberg. Ungespundetes beer is an unfiltered beer with a distinct malt aroma and a slight bitter note. In contrast to other Franconian beers, the ‘Ungespundete’ is stored for four to six weeks in a barrel without pressure, which means that it is non-carbonated. An extremely palatable and flavoursome beer is the Zwickl. ‘Zwickl’ or ‘Zwickelbier’, which is the name of our cellar beer here in Franconia, is a naturally cloudy, unfiltered beer with lots of nutrients and is therefore particularly popular.
