Dark Beer

A full-fermented beer, bottom-fermented brewed according to the German purity law, according to an individual recipe, in Franconia often according to "secret recipe" or "type of house". Dark beer usually has an original gravity of 10 to 14 percent and an alcohol content of 4.8 to 5 percent. The beer owes its dark colour to special or roasted malts used in brewing. These not only determine the colour, but also the taste. Dark beer tastes malty, a little like caramel or chocolate, but anything but sweet. Usually the dark beer has a slight bitter note. In Franconia occasionally even a somewhat smoky taste.

Because the colour of the beer is almost black like the night, the dark beer has also been given the name Schwarzbier (black beer). This comes - brewed in the Bohemian style - originally from Saxony and Thuringia, was first mentioned in a document in 1390. After a real "thirsty streak", the beer was able to re-establish itself on the German beer market after German reunification. It is now also brewed in the Bavarian style, but is still more of a "niche product" throughout Germany.

Different in Franconia. Here the dark beer has a long tradition. It is considered a genuine Franconian speciality, which numerous breweries have been brewing since time immemorial. For real lovers of dark beers, dark beer from Franconia is a real insider tip. By the way, the dark beer is drunk here from the so-called "Schwarzbierpokal". A glass which resembles the pilsner cuff. It tastes really good with a voluminous, creamy head and is tempered to eight degrees Celsius. In the online shop you will find a large selection of over 200 beers, including a wide range of excellent Franconian dark beers. We from hier-gibts-bier.de haven't really found our favourite yet. But we know that dark beer tastes best with Franconian snacks, stews, Sunday roasts and - you won't believe it - with chocolate desserts or nut cakes.
