In the heart of Franconian Switzerland, on the old trade route between Nuremberg and Bayreuth, lies the village of Breitenlesau. Here, the traditional Krug brewery has been brewing delicious Franconian beer since 1834. The family business, headed by beer artist Konrad Krug - whom everyone here just calls "Conny" - produces just under 30,000 hectoliters of beer a year. The legendary Krug lager accounts for around 80 percent of output. The dark beer is considered the most drinkable in the region and is now known far beyond the borders of Franconian Switzerland. The Krug family has achieved this almost without advertising. In addition to the lager, Krug Bräu also brews pilsner, wheat and many a special beer or beer mix. Have you ever tried the Gaas-Seidla? If not, you should do so as soon as possible. Ice-cold, the beer mix of lager, cola and cherry dessert wine is a real treat and, thanks to its 2.8 percent alcohol content, a sweet, fruity thirst quencher. Just right for hot summer days. By the way, Krug Bräu brews with the power of the sun. Krug Bräu is officially an award-winning solar beer producer. You won't find many of those in Franconia.
Brewery inn, beer garden, dance center, guesthouse
A stop at Krug Bräu is a must not only for locals, but also for many cyclists, hikers, bikers and campers. In the cozy brewery inn or in the beer garden under large shady trees, you can safely relax with a Seidla and enjoy a genuine Franconian pub cuisine. Pan-fried schnitzel, rustic roasts, hearty snacks - the Brauereigasthof is a real mecca for fans of home-style cooking.
And after the meal? Either go next door to the "BRAADN," the legendary dance center, where there's plenty of live music and theme parties from mid-October to mid-April. Or you head straight to bed - at the Pension Krug. Where you can stay wonderfully for a really affordable price.
